The Vibe
Parkrose has a practical, working community feel, blending older residential streets with industrial areas and commercial activity along Sandy Boulevard. It is a diverse neighborhood with a settled, unpretentious character.
Its identity is closely tied to the Parkrose schools and its position in the Columbia lowlands near the airport, giving it a distinct northeast-corner sense of place.
History
Parkrose is a neighborhood in far Northeast Portland, set in the lowlands between the Columbia River and the Columbia Slough near the airport. It began in the early twentieth century as a planned community and one of the area's early suburban developments, growing as its own district with a distinct identity long before it became part of Portland.
For much of its history Parkrose remained outside the city in unincorporated Multnomah County, and it gave its name to the Parkrose School District, which still anchors community identity today. The area was annexed into Portland during the major east-side annexations of the 1980s and 1990s. Its location near the airport and along major rail and highway routes shaped a mix of residential and industrial development.
Parkrose is a diverse, working-class community, with its character shaped by the surrounding Columbia industrial corridor, the airport, and the busy Sandy Boulevard commercial strip that runs through the area.
