About
Northwest Heights sits in Portland's West Hills, occupying the elevated terrain between Forest Park to the west, Hillside and Goose Hollow to the south, the Pearl District area to the east, and Linnton to the north. It is one of the smallest and most secluded neighborhoods in the city, with a 2020 Census population of 5,927 — a 4% increase from 2010. Despite being just 8 miles (17 minutes) from downtown Portland, Northwest Heights feels genuinely removed from urban density.
The neighborhood is primarily single-family residential with a strong emphasis on privacy, nature views, and proximity to Forest Park's trail network. Homes are set on larger lots amid Douglas fir trees, with many offering expansive views of downtown Portland, the Willamette Valley, and on clear days, Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. There is no commercial district within Northwest Heights proper — residents use the Northwest District (NW 23rd Ave) and Hillsdale for shopping and dining.
Schools serving the neighborhood include Forest Park Elementary (K-5), West Sylvan Middle School (grades 5-8), and Lincoln High School (grades 9-12). The neighborhood's primary appeal is its combination of urban proximity and a secluded, forested residential character — a rare quality in a city as dense as Portland.
Boundaries: Bordered by Forest Park to the west, Hillside neighborhood to the south and southeast, NW Cornell Rd / NW Lovejoy St area to the east (transitioning to Northwest District), and Linnton to the north along the ridgeline. NW Skyline Blvd marks the western ridgeline.
