The Vibe

What Kenton Feels Like

Small-town main street with Paul Bunyan

Kenton has the feel of a small town tucked inside the city, centered on a walkable historic main street watched over by its giant Paul Bunyan statue. The vintage storefronts along Denver Avenue house pubs, cafes, and shops with a friendly, community-minded spirit.

It is proudly quirky and neighborly, with a strong local identity and easy transit access to the rest of the city via the Yellow Line.

History

How Kenton Came To Be

Kenton was founded in the early twentieth century as a company town tied to the nearby Swift meatpacking plant and the Kenton stockyards, once among the largest in the West. The Denver Avenue commercial district grew up to serve workers, and the neighborhood developed a distinct, self-contained identity.

Its most famous landmark, the towering statue of Paul Bunyan, was erected in 1959 for the Oregon Centennial and still presides over the town center, a beloved symbol of Kenton's working-class, lumber-country roots.

The stockyards faded in the latter twentieth century, and Kenton settled into a quiet residential identity. The arrival of the MAX Yellow Line and a wave of small-business revival along Denver Avenue have since brought new energy to the historic main street.
