The Vibe
The Lloyd District is urban, busy, and oriented around commerce, conventions, and major venues. Office towers, hotels, and the convention center give it a downtown-adjacent energy, while newer apartments bring residents and street life.
It is highly connected by transit and within walking distance of the river, Lloyd Center, and the Rose Quarter's arenas. The area suits those who want central, car-light city living on the east side of the river.
History
The Lloyd District sits on the east bank of the Willamette River, just across from downtown, and is named for Ralph Lloyd, a California oilman who acquired and assembled large tracts of land here in the early twentieth century with ambitions of building a major commercial center.
Lloyd's vision unfolded over the following decades. The area became home to Lloyd Center, which opened in 1960 as one of the largest shopping malls in the country at the time, along with a cluster of office towers, hotels, and the Oregon Convention Center. The district grew into Portland's secondary commercial hub east of the river.
In more recent years the Lloyd District has been a focus of dense mixed-use redevelopment, adding apartments and amenities and evolving from a daytime business district into a more around-the-clock urban neighborhood.
