About
Hillside is a Northwest Portland neighborhood — not Southwest — that climbs the eastern slope of the Tualatin Mountains between NW Cornell Road (north), NW Westover (east), West Burnside (south), and NW Barnes Road (west). The area is frequently called "Kings Heights" by longtime residents. Its terraced streets follow contour lines up the hillside, offering views of downtown Portland and the Willamette River from many front porches.
The neighborhood's social center is Hillside Park and Hillside Community Center — a former school building from the 1940s that was later an artists' co-op before citizens banded together to purchase it from a would-be condo developer. The center today hosts community meetings, neighborhood events, and the Adams Community Garden at 4300 NW Cornell Rd. To the west, the neighborhood abuts the Pittock Mansion grounds and the wild edge of Forest Park, giving Hillside residents trail access to 5,200 acres of urban forest within walking distance.
Hillside is governed by the Hillside Neighborhood Association (HNA), which meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month and aligns with the District 4 Coalition (D4C). Home values are among the highest in Portland, reflecting the combination of views, proximity to Washington Park's world-class attractions, and the Forest Park trailhead access.
Boundaries: Bordered by NW Cornell Rd to the north, NW Westover to the east, West Burnside St to the south, and NW Barnes Rd / NW 48th Ave to the west. Adjoins Forest Park, Washington Park, and Kings Heights.
