The Vibe
Belmont is energetic, eclectic, and unmistakably inner-Portland, packed with coffeehouses, bars, vintage shops, and restaurants along a walkable, pedestrian-scaled street. The atmosphere is creative and a little bohemian.
The corridor draws a steady flow of locals and visitors day and night, with a mix of old Portland grit and newer polish that gives it a lively, lived-in feel.
History
Belmont is a commercial corridor neighborhood centered on Southeast Belmont Street, one of the inner east side's classic streetcar-era business streets. As Portland's east side filled in during the early twentieth century, Belmont Street developed as a walkable spine of shops, theaters, and storefronts serving the surrounding residential blocks.
The corridor weathered the mid-century shift toward automobiles and the decline that touched many inner-city commercial streets, then saw renewed energy from the 1990s onward as a wave of cafes, bars, restaurants, and small businesses revitalized the strip. The historic Avalon area and the long-running movie house tradition anchored the street's character.
Today Belmont is one of inner Southeast's most distinctive commercial districts, a dense, eclectic stretch of independent businesses set among the bungalows and old apartment buildings of the surrounding Sunnyside and Buckman neighborhoods.
