The Vibe

What Irvington Feels Like

Stately, historic, architecturally grand

Irvington is stately, historic, and beautifully preserved, a neighborhood of broad streets, mature trees, and grand homes that feels like a living museum of early Portland architecture. The atmosphere is dignified and serene.

Residents enjoy quiet, walkable blocks and easy access to the shops and restaurants of Northeast Broadway, all within one of the city's most admired historic districts.

History

How Irvington Came To Be

Irvington is one of Portland's grandest early residential neighborhoods, platted in the late nineteenth century and built out largely between the 1890s and the 1920s. Developers imposed unusually high building standards for the era, and the area attracted prominent families who commissioned large, architecturally ambitious homes.

The neighborhood's wide, tree-lined streets and stately houses earned it recognition as a National Register Historic District, one of the largest in the city. Its early restrictions and prestige made it a showcase of Portland's turn-of-the-century residential architecture.

Irvington has remained remarkably intact and continues to be one of Northeast Portland's most prestigious and architecturally significant neighborhoods, with a small commercial cluster around Northeast Broadway at its edge.
