The Vibe
Foster-Powell is friendly, diverse, and on the rise, with a residential core and an energizing commercial strip along Foster Road. The mood is unpretentious and community-minded.
Known locally as FoPo, the neighborhood mixes longtime residents with newcomers drawn by its affordability and its growing crop of independent businesses, giving it a welcoming, evolving feel.
History
Foster-Powell takes its name and its shape from the triangle formed where Foster Road and Powell Boulevard converge in Southeast Portland. The diagonal cut of Foster Road, an old route toward the southeast, gives the neighborhood its distinctive wedge geometry. The area filled in through the early and mid-twentieth century with modest homes serving working families.
For much of its history Foster-Powell was a quiet, affordable, and somewhat overlooked residential district. In recent years the Foster Road corridor has seen reinvestment, streetscape improvements, and a wave of new cafes, bars, restaurants, and small businesses that have raised the neighborhood's profile.
Today Foster-Powell, affectionately known as 'FoPo,' is a diverse, increasingly lively neighborhood that balances its affordable residential roots with a growing commercial scene along Foster Road.
