The Vibe

What Hollywood Feels Like

Busy commercial and transit crossroads

Hollywood is busy, practical, and centrally connected, a commercial crossroads anchored by its historic theater and threaded with major streets and transit. It has a more urban, errand-running energy than the quieter residential neighborhoods nearby.

The district mixes shops, restaurants, and services with the steady flow of a transit hub, while the landmark Hollywood Theatre gives it a distinctive sense of place.

History

How Hollywood Came To Be

Hollywood is named for the Hollywood Theatre, the ornate Spanish Colonial movie palace that opened on Northeast Sandy Boulevard in 1926 and still operates today as a landmark and nonprofit cinema. The surrounding district grew into one of Northeast Portland's busiest commercial centers, drawing shoppers from across the area.

The neighborhood's commercial life clusters where Sandy Boulevard, Broadway, and other major streets converge, and the arrival of regional transit, including the MAX light rail and a transit center, reinforced Hollywood's role as a hub. The district has long mixed retail, dining, and services with surrounding residential blocks.

The Hollywood Theatre remains the neighborhood's signature institution, and the area continues to serve as a lively commercial and transit crossroads for Northeast Portland.
