About

Bethany

Bethany has collected an unusual number of superlatives for a relatively young community. Fortune named it one of the 50 Best Places to Live for Families in 2024. Niche.com named it the Best Suburb to Live in Oregon, the Best Place to Raise a Family in Oregon, and the Best Suburb to Buy a House in the state. None of this happened by accident: Bethany was planned with extraordinary intentionality, incorporating trails, parks, and school access into its growth from the 1990s onward.

The name itself dates to the 1800s, but the population explosion is recent — the community more than doubled in the two decades before 2020, reaching 31,350 residents (2020 Census). Despite a Portland mailing address, Bethany is not served by the City of Portland or any incorporated city; it is unincorporated Washington County, governed at the county level.

The community's commercial center is Bethany Village, a picturesque shopping center that functions as the neighborhood's de facto town square. Bethany's Table serves artisan European-style pizza with locally sourced ingredients and an extensive wine list. Bethany Public House & Brewery (4840 NW Bethany Blvd) is a family-friendly gastropub with 22 rotating local taps, hand-tossed pizza, Wagyu burgers, and a pet-friendly patio — closed in early 2026 but a longtime community anchor. A second restaurant cluster sits near Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus on the western side of the neighborhood. The 80-mile park and trail network ties the entire community together on foot and bike.

Boundaries: Unincorporated Washington County north and west of Portland. Roughly bounded by NW Germantown Rd (north/east), NW Cornell Rd (south), NW 185th Ave (west), and NW Springville Rd (east). Borders the City of Portland to the east.
