Mateo! My go-to barber from now on. I highly recommend his talent- He cut off all my hair for me and made me smile so big. Not to mention I get compliments daily! Now he’s the only person who I want cutting my hair. Thanks for making me feel confident. Seriously, Culture Barbershop is such a hidden gem. Skilled and sweet barbers, great atmosphere, great music. I have so much fun getting my hair cut. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
These guys are friendly, but they did me dirty. I made an appointment and they ignored me and played foosball for another 30 minutes after I got there. They were all drinking, and the manager (owner?) got weird with me when he offered me a beer and I declined. The dude (Alex) who cut my hair totally gave me the most half-assed haircut I've ever gotten, to the point that I was asked multiple times this weekend if I cut my own hair. I basically paid $70 for the privilege of having my drunk neighbor give me one of the worst haircuts of my life. I feel like I got punished for coming in and not already being best friends with all these guys, and the whole time I was there, I felt like an intruder at a party I wasn't invited to. This place ain't it, unless you only wanna go have some drinks and play foosball and maybe get some lines cut into your eyebrows or something, but you can just get some of your own friends together and do that for free.
I used to really like this place. I was going consistently for a couple of years, but recently it has gotten pretty unprofessional. I'll schedule an appointment well ahead of time, but my last three appointments have been cancelled only hours before I'm supposed to go in. Their site says they have a 12hr cancellation fee for customers. So why is it that I'm charged for cancelling, but my barber is able to do it without consequences? It's frustrating to schedule a haircut only for it to cancelled right before my appointment. The barbers will often take phone calls, text, and vape inside the shop while also cutting hair. It makes me feel like they aren't paying attention to the customers and the prices are just too high for this inconsistent of service.
I've been going here since the pandemic ended, and have been very happy with the service I get. I started out scheduling next available barber and eventually settled into a regular cadence with first Julio and then Mateo - both of whom do excellent work. I usually am getting a beard trim, sometimes a haircut and occasionally a facial which for a special occasion is totally worth it. 100% recommend.
Culture Barbershop St. Johns is the best barber shop in portland! Its got the best staff and even better vibes. The welcoming culture and atmosphere will definitely have me coming back for more hair cuts!
