Off putting atmosphere. This was my second time visiting and I can’t believe how much hasn’t changed. The glass is over priced. The plants are over priced and the selection (considering they’re a terrarium store) is disappointing. Most of the plants offered can be found at much larger sizes for a few cents more, or at lower prices with bundle deals (ex: 2 for $5). The terrariums themselves are overpriced. Given their location, the price, and limited variety of plants, glass, and terrariums, this store has little to offer for both people who want to get into terrariums, or terrarium enthusiasts who would like to have a reliable space to shop in-person. They claim their prices are due to the fact that “these terrariums will last you years” so you should come “ready to invest in the terrarium you want”. They also claim that their plants “aren’t ordinary” they’re “clean and healthy”. 1.) terrariums can fail due to numerous reasons, it’s trial and error. They can never guarantee that your terrarium will live for years. 2.) making sure your plants are clean and healthy is the bare minimum as a seller. You can’t sell apples if they’re spoiled. 3.) most people could probably make the “terrarium they want” that will last them years, if they got their products elsewhere (this includes other small plant shops in PDX!) So, why is this store here? It doesn’t cater to enthusiasts, and it doesn’t cater to new terrarium owners. It’s soured many potential hobbyists by providing them with the wrong foundations. A lot of people take their terrarium course and feel scammed. This has been a concern for 6 years. Yet, nothing has changed. I won’t continue to beat a dead horse, but outside of these off-putting business practices, the owner of this business has been accused of making homophobic comments. Making a terrarium can be an easy at-home craft, and it should never be this expensive (or stressful). Save your time and money! :)

Roosevelt’s is always an amazing experience. I made my terrariums many years ago, and have to bring them in every so often to get them fixed up. Daniel is always kind and very patiently explains how to care for the terrariums properly (which I very much appreciate as I already feel kind of silly that I've had to bring in my terrariums time after time to have them rescued). Glad that they are still here and will continue to be here :) I will also add after reading another review on here -- I remember being surprised by the cost of my terrarium when I first made it many years ago during a class, HOWEVER, I have taken advantage of the no fault warranty so many times over the last 8 years, that it was definitely worth the initial price.

Took a Terrarium workshop with my daughter today, and it was fantastic. I was surprised by the number of plant, stone, and glass options available. Once you pick out your container all the soil, stone, and plants are included (at least when you take the workshop). I also loved learning a little bit about the history of terrariums. During the workshop, we never felt rushed. Wren was friendly and did a great job of gently guiding the participants. I was amazed to learn about the lifetime warranty on all their terrariums.

Daniel is such a great person to work with when building a terrarium. Roosevelt's has the best selection of plants...Get a Groupon and enjoy a day of learning about terrariums and building one...expect to pay extra$$ for the glass you are going to use for the terrarium. Closed terrariums are so easy to care for. I've made three so far and plan to make another huge one. I've also made some with a friend who had never done anything with plants. He made two and has glass for another 3. I guess you can say it's our thing now.

What a phenomenonal experience! Daniel is a passionate teacher who leads a wonderful and informative class on not just terrarium building but gives you the history and science behind these beautiful little ecosystems. Highly recommend the class experience for anyone who enjoys plants - and especially for those who think they don't have a green thumb! The shop offers a no-fault warranty and if anything goes wrong or your beautiful creation needs some extra help just bring it back to the shop and Daniel will repair it to new and provide some tips and tricks for going forward. Worth the price and a must do experience in Portland!!
